What I See- Slumdog Millionaire

I must accept a late pass on this one. I finally made it out to the movies to see the movie the Oscars dubbed the best film of the year. Slumdog Millionaire is about the story of a poor “slumdog” who is a question away from winning 20 million rupees. Due to lack of formal education and his finical standing, the police believe he is cheating. The story revolves around how he gathered the correct answers through his life experiences
The film has a very realistic feel to it. This feel is achieved by many quick shots and drastic pov shots. The quick shots and moving camera reminded me how the average film viewer in 2009 loves movement in their action scenes. With the developments in video games and, the media in general, the audience currently demands lot in order to keep its attention. Keeping this in mind no one held back during this film. The action had plenty of movement, but was very neat. It did not induce headache or nausea like the action in the Bourne series. The drastic povs really helped you understand the uneasy emotions the characters were feeling during most of the scenes. The film makers also used many deep, strong colors throughout the film. I believe the colors to help convey the beauty of Indian culture. The mixture of the camera movement and the beautiful scenery made me think that even while the characters were experiencing intense emotions be it good or bad, they were surrounded by beauty. If that was the intent it gives a very optimistic outlook on life. Deal with what ever life throws at you, but see the beauty around it.

Musuem Trip

Last week me and my media 150 class took a trip to the Museum Of Modern Moving Image.
One thing I really loved about the museum was the hands on activities they had. I participated in two motion activities as well as one that centered around sound. The motion based activities were a blast. The first one I visted created a short flip book with the use of a camera. The other activity had a camera in the ceiling that took pictures of a cartoon backround and allowed you to construct your own cartoons. I spent most of my time at the sound station though. I was drawn into the sound demos during the tour. On the tour the guide played us various clips of films dubbed with different scores over it. It was interesting the way the emphasis was laid on different actions with different audio in front of it. Once the tour wrapped up I visited the sound effects booth. The sound effects booth was similar to the other sound demo. The differenced was in what you were allowed to play around with. This demo allowed you to view a scene and switch out other sounds. This allowed me to see how variations in the sounds dramatically affected the flow and tone of the scene. This held true for all different types of scenes from all genres. All this editing coupled with the video on how sound effects were made, got my brain going. I begun to think about how you could use different sounds to portrait certain views, tones, moods and even insight during a film.



The demo also had me think of some "mashup videos" I did last year. The idea behind it was similar to how a hip hop producer uses an old record to make a beat of his own. Me and my partner wanted to help a former friend out with some promo work. Seeing as how he had no funds and we were in the same boat. We came up with the idea of using others visual to telling a story along to his music. We used three songs of his. Swing X Crash is the first video it draws from visuals in ( Death Proof, Beavis and Butthead do America, 40 Year Old Virgin, Crash (Cronenberg, and Death Wish). This video was made more for a larger audience. While the second video we did used visuals from Fellinis Spirit of the Dead which is based on Edgar Allen Poes short story Toby Dammit. I have seen plenty more of these mashup videos since we released these.
